Just married written on car window

Congrats! You tied the knot, jumped the broom, got hitched. While it might be tempting to kick back on the couch with your honey (and boatloads of wedding gifts!), there are a handful of things you should take care of pretty quickly. You’ll get to relax with your beloved soon, but here are five things to do right after you say, “I do.”

What to Do After You Get Married

Ensure your vendors are paid in full.

Some vendors won’t ask for their final payment until the wedding day, so don’t forget about them in the midst of celebrations! Make sure you go over a list of all your vendors (DJ, florist, caterer, etc.) with your new spouse immediately after the wedding and confirm that everyone has been paid in full.

Pro tip: Prior to the wedding, put the parents of the bride or parents of the groom in charge of this. Give them the check, and let the vendors know who will have it. That way, you can enjoy your day without handling any financial logistics!

Write thank-you notes.

The sooner you get this done, the better! As you open gifts and cards, write down what every guest gave you – you’ll want to thank them for their specific gift so they know you received and acknowledged it. Divide and conquer the thank-you notes with your partner and you’ll get it done in no time.

Another pro-tip: Address thank-you note envelopes at the same time you address invitations. You’ll have the address information readily available, and it makes one less thing you’ll have to do after the wedding!

Update your name on legal documents (and everywhere else!)

If you changed your name, you’ll need to set aside a day or two to do all the boring, clerical stuff. Start by getting a certified copy of your marriage license, which you can get at the county clerk’s office where your license was filed. This handy piece of paper will be necessary for changing your name on your:

  • Social security card: You can get a new Social Security card by mailing an application to your local office or visiting in person.
  • Driver’s license: Head to your local DMV with your current license, marriage license, and new Social Security card (or temporary Social Security card) to update your name on your driver’s license.
  • Passport: If you need a new passport, visit the S. Department of State website to print off the necessary forms.
  • Bank account: Finally, head to your local bank with all of your paperwork in hand to change the name on your account.

Don’t forget to change your name everywhere else, too. Contact your employer, post office, utility company, landlord, doctor, and so on to let them know your name has legally changed.

Update your auto insurance.

What on earth does marriage have to do with car insurance? Surprisingly, a lot! You may want to ditch your separate auto insurance plans and get one together – or you may want to stay on separate plans if your new spouse is dealing with a unique situation. Perhaps they have a spotty driving record or a collection of classic cars that require special insurance coverage.

In some cases, getting married could lead to more affordable car insurance. It’s true! Some insurance companies view married people as safer drivers, so your happily ever after may come with some happy savings.
