October is Fall Car Care Month and the perfect time to put some extra care into making sure your car is ready for the upcoming weather changes. Not sure where to start? Use these tips to help avoid cold weather mishaps.
Get a maintenance check
Whether you do it yourself or go to a professional, have your car inspected (and repaired as needed). The Car Care Council recommends inspecting the following:
- Tires and breaks
- Gas, oil, and filters
- System checks – charging, cooling, and exhaust
Pack the essentials
Regardless of whether you’ll be travelling a lot for upcoming holidays or just commuting to work, you never know when you might run into trouble along the way. So if you don’t have one already, pack an emergency kit to have on hand in the event of an emergency. For colder months, you might also want to make sure your kit includes: warm gloves, jumper cables (or a portable battery charger), blanket(s), an ice/snow scraper, extra windshield washer fluid (preferably the kind with de-icer/ anti-freeze) and kitty litter (to use on icy roads).
Safe driving in seasonal weather
Do you know the proper following distance when driving on ice or snow? How about which way you should turn if your car skids? If you’re driving in hazardous weather conditions, it’s important to know how they could affect your car’s performance. For safe winter driving tips and more, check out the winter survival brochure from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety.
Plan for the unexpected
If you do end up stranded, having a back up plan could help you get on the road again faster. At Direct Auto Insurance, our Roadside Assistance program can help you with things like mechanical problems, 24-hour towing, and gas delivery. Another way to be prepared this season? Keep your proof of car insurance in a convenient location like your glove box so it’s easily accessible in the event of an accident.
