Gabrielle Flowers Rader with family.

I learned to drive at a pretty early age, so once it was time to get my license, I was ready. After a couple of weeks of driver’s education, securing a learner’s permit, and finally passing my driving test, I was on the road! My grandparents were so proud of my accomplishment that they gifted me with my very first car, a maroon 1987 Mercury Cougar. It wasn’t the prettiest car, but it was mine, and I no longer had to ride the school bus as a junior in high school.

One day, after leaving school, I was involved in my first accident, not even a block down the road. Apparently, I was driving a bit too fast and wasn’t able to make a complete stop when the car in front of me slammed on her breaks. As you can probably guess, things didn’t end up too well. While standing on the side of the road with a messed-up grill and with tears in my eyes from the shock, I then had to watch all my friends stare me down as they rode by in their own cars or on the bus. So embarrassing!! Luckily things weren’t that bad, my car was quickly fixed, and I was back on the road in no time!

I wish I could say that the embarrassment left, but we all know how that goes. I didn’t live that moment down for quite some time! Lesson learned, keep your distance while driving.
