As you head out this Labor Day weekend for one last summer road trip, it’s important to remember some key auto safety tips that will help keep everyone safe during the trip.

Let’s cover some safety tips to help everyone make the most out of their Labor Day drive.

Schedule A Tune Up

Schedule a quick maintenance visit with your car mechanic before you head out of town. Be sure to let them know that you’ll be going on a road trip and want to make sure your car can handle the trek. Your mechanic should be able to offer recommendations on any minor repairs that should be tackled before your trip.

Plan Your Route Early

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, roughly “660,000 drivers are using cell phones or manipulating electronic devices while driving” which makes them 3times more likely to get into a car accident. By planning your driving route before you ever hit the road, you can avoid distractions like fiddling with your GPS or calling to ask for directions, making the trip safer for everyone. And, if you plan your route ahead of time, you can look for alternate routes to bypass roads with heavy traffic.

Have Your Roadside Emergency Kit Prepared

Most drivers don’t think to look at their roadside kit until they’re already in need of roadside assistance. Before you pack up the car with bags and snacks, give your roadside emergency kit a look. Do you have all the essentials? If not, stock up with a first aid kit, flashlight, jumper cables, etc. to help in case of an emergency.

Have Your Insurance Card Handy

Another preparedness tip? Make sure you have your proof of insurance! Store your insurance ID card in your car somewhere you can easily get to it.
