Red car turning

From time to time, you’ll need to spin around while driving to grab that last parking space or to take the turn you missed. Whether you’re new to driving or simply need a little refresher, we want you to feel comfortable making different turns, no matter where you are. Our guide to two-point, three-point, and U-turns (complete with GIFs) will give you the knowledge you need to turn quickly and confidently.

Before we begin, always remember to check your surroundings ahead of the turn. Ensure you are clear of other cars and note if any signs prohibit the maneuver you’re about to make.

U-turn demonstration

U-turns are an ideal way to spin around on wider roads or highways with ample room. Please note, U-turns are not allowed on many streets, so be sure to check for any signs indicating if they’re prohibited.

How to Make a U-Turn

  1. Signal left from the far-left lane.
  2. Stop and check for traffic.
  3. Complete the U-turn in the closest possible lane in the opposite direction

Two-point turn demonstration

When you don’t have enough room to make a U-turn, you have other options. A two-point turn allows you to change direction in areas with low traffic by making use of driveways or cross streets.

How to Make a Two-Point Turn

  1. Stop at the end of a driveway or cross street and reverse your vehicle into it.
  2. Pull forward into the roadway and make your turn in the other direction.

Need to turn around on a narrow street but don’t have access to a driveway or cross street? A three-point turn is your best bet.

How to Make a Three-Point Turn

  1. Move to the outer part of the road for ample turning room.
  2. Turn steering wheel fully to the left and accelerate forward to the opposite side.
  3. Turn steering wheel all the way to the right and reverse.
  4. Shift back into drive and continue in new direction.
