How to Celebrate National Love Your Pet Day

It’s “pawty” time! “Bark”-mark, your calendars because Tuesday, February 20th is National Love Your Pet Day! Celebrate your pet with a day filled with warm and fuzzies! Pets are known to help keep us healthy by lowering our stress level and blood pressure, so give back to them with extra special attention doing these fun pet-friendly activities that’ll get their tails and tongues wagging. Find out how much they really love you and they just might do anything, like bark “Thank You!” Ok, well maybe that’s wishful thinking and animals can’t really talk, but there are plenty of other ways they can show their affection and gratitude to you.
- “Who let the dogs out?!”
Take your pooch to the park for some one-on-one time in the great outdoors, but before you get led out the door, be sure you pick a petsafe dog park where they can roam off-leash. If your community lacks a nearby dog park, you can apply for a grant to help build new dog parks at PetSafe. On the other “paw”, if you’re feeling adventurous the next time you go on vacation, bring Fido with you! The National Park Foundation has a list of several dog-friendly national parks where you can both take in the sights and smells of mother nature.
Tip: The freezing temperatures during winter can be dangerous to pets left outside. For their safety, happiness, and healthiness, bring them inside during winter and make sure you have plenty of blankets for them to snuggle up in. If the temperatures are unbearable for you, then they’re definitely not bearable for your four-legged pal.
- Adopt, Don’t Shop
If you’re looking to add to your furry family, adopting is the way to go! Not only are you saving a life, but it’s also more affordable. Plus, you’re adding another member of the family to entertain both you and your pet. There are many adoption centers and animal shelters that need you! Start by finding the nearest Humane Society in your city or you can search the ASPCA’s website. If you’re looking for a pet online, be sure the individual you are buying from is not illegally selling or abusing animals for profit. Contact your vet or local humane society for more information.
- Donate to an animal shelter
Sometimes the simplest way to show you care about your pet is to give back to other pets by volunteering or donating a few dollars for items a shelter might need, such as dog food, supplies such as paper towels, treats and even used dog beds. Contact your local animal shelter to see if there is a wish list of items you can help donate. The Humane Society donations list is a great place to start!
- Pamper your pet
Is their fur looking a little drab? Could they use an extra bounce in their step with a fresh shampoo or pawdicure? Sometimes a nice bath and brush is all it takes to get them prancing around. These dog grooming tips are a great way to get started!
- Get social
Once you’ve got them looking all nice and shiny, take a picture of you and your furry friend and share it on social media with the hashtag #NationalLoveYourPetDay to show the world how much you care about your pet.
