How to carve a pumpkin

How do you carve a jack-o’-lantern?

First, pick out a healthy pumpkin from your local pumpkin patch, grocery store, or farmer’s market. Then, get into the creative spirit and participate in this fun family tradition of pumpkin carving with the steps below!

Carving a pumpkin into a jack-o-lantern is a beloved age-old Halloween tradition. Follow these seven easy steps to create your own.

What you need:

Pumpkin(s), Marker, Sharp serrated knife, Spoon, Petroleum jelly, Tea-light candle, Stencil (optional).

Draw or trace a stencil design on the pumpkin with a marker.

Cut off the crown with a sharp serrated knife to create a lid.

Scoop out the pulp and seeds with a spoon. Discard or use in a pumpkin recipe.

Carve along the drawn lines in a downward direction.

Coat the inside of the pumpkin and all cut surfaces, with petroleum jelly to help it last longer.

Place a lit tea-light candle or battery-operated candle inside the pumpkin.

Show off the jack-o’-lantern on your windowsill, front porch, or social media!
