a man and woman work together on taxes

You may already know why it’s a good idea to file your taxes early. But what do you do if you need assistance getting them done? Well, we have some information to help you find the right services! Here are a few of the best places to file your taxes for FREE, both online and offline.

1. The Internal Revenue Service

The IRS offers a convenient online tool for looking up providers who participate in the Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) and Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) programs. Qualifying taxpayers can get free tax help from participating tax preparers. The search tool even lets you know if a location supports foreign languages.

2. The Free File Alliance

The Free File Alliance is made up of a group of online tax preparers (like TurboTax) ready to help you prepare your federal taxes. There’s a very good chance you’re among the 70% of Americans — that’s over 100 million people! — who qualify. Taxpayers with an adjusted gross income of $72,000 or less can visit www.IRS.gov/freefile to get started. Make more than $72,000? You can still visit the link for free forms that are ready for you to fill out, which will at least help you get started.

3. AARP Foundation

Even if you’re a few decades away from retirement, the AARP Foundation provides free tax preparation help. Yes, this is the same AARP that focuses a lot of its attention on people over the age of 50, but its free tax preparation services are available to everyone! They can help you answer questions, like what deductions and credits can I claim or are HSA contributions tax deductible, and make the filing process less stressful.

4. Credit Karma

Personal finance company Credit Karma helps you file state and federal taxes online for free. In exchange for the free support, you’ll receive offers for third-party services. You can decline them, and the tax filing is still free.

5. H&R Block

Consumer Reports considers H&R Block’s More Zero Free Edition more robust than the free offerings from TaxAct and TurboTax. In fact, it even covers itemized deductions! H&R Block also has some tech cred, too: you can take a picture of your W-2 with your smartphone and upload it, saving yourself some serious time.
